NEW DELHI: Congress leaders Sunday unanimously condemned the attack on the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) office here by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activists, terming it "a sordid act of hooliganism", and some leaders even visited the party office.
Led by union Tourism and Culture Minister Ambika Soni, Congress leaders criticised the attack, while Congress spokesperson M. Veerappa Moily along with B.K. Hariprasad, and Kishor Chandra Deo, both senior party leaders visited the CPI-M office.
"The attack is condemnable. It shows how the communal forces attack. There are democratic ways to oppose anything," Ambika Soni told the reporters outside the A.K. Gopalan Bhawan, the CPI-M headquarters where the party's central committee meeting was on.
The attack is seen as a direct fallout of the ongoing confrontation between the CPI-M and RSS activists in Kerala's Kannur district, which has left seven people killed over the past four days.
Moily also met Politburo member Sitaram Yechury and party general secretary Prakash Karat.
"It was a sordid act of hooliganism, and must be condemned. It was shocking. The attackers were killers of Mahatma Gandhi. They came well prepared. The law must take its own course in this regard," Moily told reporters.
The local police acted swiftly to control the mob.
"As per the norms, the agitators were supposed to inform the local police in advance, and seek permission, which they did not. The police, however, acted swiftly by chipping in more personnel to contain the mob," Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said.
"A first information report is being filed at the Mandir Marg police station. Around 14 people have been detained. Further details are still awaited," Bhagat added.
Several cars, including those of Sitaram Yechury and Prakash Karat, were damaged in stone hurling by the attackers. "Extra police forces have been deployed to maintain order in the area," Bhagat said.
