The Government Railway Police (GRP) officials of Kalyan and Nashik have nabbed 10 people who were involved in three dacoities that took place aboard the Kurla-Patna Express in February and in the beginning of March.

Members of this gang usually got on the train at Kalyan and when the train crossed urban limits, before the Kasara railway station, threatened passengers with knives and demanded that they hand over all their belongings and cash.

The first dacoity took place on February 3, in which more than 40 people were robbed of their belongings. The accused then fled from the train near the Igatpuri railway station, where the train slows down.

The second time this gang robbed the same train was on February 23, where many passengers from the general bogie were robbed of cash and jewellery. GRP then formed a special squad to nab these dacoits and officials from the crime branch and police station, dressed in plain clothes, kept patrol on the train till it reached the Igatpuri station after February 24.

On March 3, officials from the special squad were present on the train and they patrolled all the general bogies but got down at the Igatpuri railway station, thinking that there was no danger to the passengers.

The assumption of GRP officials proved wrong, and as the train left Igatpuri station, the dacoits, armed with choppers and knives, robbed the train. But this time, they were not so lucky, as the passengers fought back. To avoid any serious problem, the five dacoits jumped off from the moving train. A member of the gang, Bablu, died on the spot and two others were seriously injured and got themselves admitted at the Civil Hospital in Nashik.

GRP officials from Igatpuri, who were present in another bogie of the train, heard the commotion and started chasing one member of this gang, Shankar Ravidas, and arrested him when he was trying to flee.

Ravidas was then interrogated by the police and 10 other members of this gang were arrested from various places in Mumbai.

Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Kathavte from the Kalyan GRP, said “After interrogating Ravidas, we came to know that two of his accomplices had injured themselves seriously after jumping from the train so we checked the Civil Hospital in Nashik and they were found there. They were also questioned and then acting on details provided by them, we nabbed the other 10 accused.”
