Body of an eight-year-old boy, who was kidnapped last week by a tenant staying at his residence, was found abandoned in Vasai on Monday.

Kandivali resident Aditya Jangle’s head was found severed from his body. The Samta Nagar police have arrested Avinash Doke, 37, who was a tenant in Jangle’s house.

According to the police, Doke was jobless and wanted to earn some quick money by kidnapping the child and releasing him for a ransom.

However, fearing his arrest, he strangulated Aditya to death and then burnt his body before throwing it in the deep creek in Vasai on Friday, the police said. “The head of the body might have severed while it was falling down the creek,” said DCP Shivaji Bodke, adding that further investigations in the case are still continuing.

According to the police, Doke first took Aditya to Girgaum, from where he made the call to demand ransom. He further took him to Kandivili and then to Mira Road.

Doke was arrested after a woman identified Aditya’s photograph as the police were investigating in Kandivili. Doke had kept Aditya with the woman for a while before taking him to Mira Road.

Aditya, a Std II student, had gone for his morning tuitions around 11 am on February 20. However, when he did not return home.

His mother Jayshree, an MNS activist, checked with all his friends and neighbours but failed to find him. Around 3 pm, she received an anonymous call and the person asked for her husband’s cell phone number. Jayshree gave the number without enquiring much.

An hour later when Janu, who works with KEM Hospital, and Jayshree approached the police. Janu received another call and the person demanded Rs10 lakh for freeing their son.

“The caller said that he knew they were sitting in the police station. He also warned Janu to ask her wife not to be too smart,” said a senior police officer. The police had then traced the number to a local phone in Girgaum in south Mumbai.
