LONDON: Listening to rap music is not that good an idea especially when you are with girls.

Experts say even if the lyrics are not offensive, rap can induce misogynistic attitude in both men and women.

Rap songs can trigger chauvinistic attitudes hidden deep within our psyche, instead of directly causing such beliefs, a new study claims.

The study was conducted on more than 200 students, divided into three groups. The control group did not listen to any music, the second group listened to Sabotage by Beastie Boys with non-sexist lyrics and the third Kill You by Eminem which describes violence against women.

The three groups were given a questionnaire to assess their levels of sexism.

It was found that the students who listened to rap music displayed significantly higher levels of sexism in their answers to the questionnaire, Daily Mail reported.

This increased even after exposure to the rap with non-sexist lyrics.

''It's like hearing the word 'chocolate' and suddenly having a craving for a candy bar. Sexism is imbedded in the culture we live in, and hearing rap music can spontaneously activate pre-existing awareness of sexist beliefs,'' the paper quoted Dr Michael Cobb, of North Carolina State University which carried out the study, as  saying.
