Will call experts from IIT-B and other academicians to appraise its style of teaching

Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), an autonomous institute, in a bid to improve the quality of education being imparted at the institute, has decided to appraise its faculty and the courses it offers.

KG Narayankhedkar, director of the institute, has introduced an audit system from this semester, where experts from IIT- Powai, polytechnic institutes and industrialists with an academic bent of mind, will review the results of the 150 courses the institute offers.

“They will short list the courses in which students have either performed poorly or shown good results. They will then review the course content and share their observations with me.”

Teachers will be required to maintain a course diary containing information on students’ attendance, the course plan and pedagogy, assignments and details of counselling provided students. Question papers set by them will also be reviewed. The auditors will also monitor teachers’ style of marking their students’ answers.

Narayankhedkar added, “General observations will be sent to the departments, while specific observations will be discussed with individual teachers. Teachers whose performance is deemed as weak will be counselled and asked to improve the quality of teaching.”

PG Nambiar, a teacher from the institute, feels that the initiative will help in improving the quality and efficiency of teachers. However, many others are not pleased with the appraisal. A senior teacher has condemned the system, terming it as harsh.
