Chinese telecom vendor in talks with OEMs
NEW DELHI: Chinese telecom equipment major Huawei Technologies is planning to set up a manufacturing plant in India by the end of this calendar year, according to company officials.
For setting up the facility, the Chinese vendor is in talks with several original equipment manufacturers or OEMs.
Although the location of the plant is yet to be finalised, it is likely to be in the northern part of the country. To begin with, the plant will manufacture telecom equipment (both for CDMA and GSM service providers), and not handsets.
It is learnt that over the next couple of years, Huawei wants to shift its focus completely to global systems for mobile communications (GSM), as against its current strategy of concentrating on both GSM and code division multiple access (CDMA).
Recently, Huawei entered an agreement with Reliance Communications for supplying GSM equipment. It has also been an equipment supplier for state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) through an earlier tender. According to the company’s India CEO Max Yang, Huawei is gearing up to become the top telecom vendor in India.
Besides the manufacturing facility, the company is making investments towards its R&D and software development hub in Bangalore.
Two years ago, the Indian government came out with a policy decision that telecom vendors must have a production unit in the country. Telecom equipment companies like Nokia and Ericsson already have manufacturing facilities in India.
Although there were fears of political opposition earlier, Huawei officials said that there were no obstacles.
Huawei’s dedicated software development centre in Bangalore is engaged in developing cutting-edge technologies that include next generation network, data communication, telecom middleware, network management, intelligent network, mobile handset, server, security and optical network.
