MUMBAI: With its principal Pramila Rao back in office, students of the Government Law College (GLC) now see light at the end of the tunnel. Rao, who was reinstated as principal of the college on Tuesday, said that her voluntary retirement application was not accepted by the government. “Let’s see how things shape up for the college from here,” Rao said.

Bombay High Court, however, has taken a stern stand against the state for its inability to fill up vacant posts for permanent teachers.

Government pleader DA Nalavade said they had appointed four out of the required 10 permanent professors and others would be appointed in a month.

Chief justice Swatanter Kumar, commenting on the government’s lax approach and red-tapism, said “People resign because it is frustrating to work—is that a com-pliment to the government or to the college?” Kumar refused to accept further
statements and affidavits from the government.

The court has now directed the government to resolve within two weeks the controversies raised in the PIL filed by the GLC alumni. The court direction implies to filling up of posts in the college and the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC). The court also scolded MPSC for not appointing members for the commission.
