Kolkata’s Ganguly has seven on his wish list for the city side in IPL

KOLKATA: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has zeroed in on seven players for the Kolkata team that he will be leading in the Twenty20 tournament of the Indian Premier League (IPL), starting April 18.

After a teleconference with Kolkata franchise owner Shah Rukh Khan on Monday evening, Ganguly is ready to build his dream team. The players’ auction is slated for February 20.

“I would always like to have players like Gilly (Adam Gilchrist), Jacques Kallis, Mathew Hayden, Shaun Pollock, Brett Lee, Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Yousuf on my side,” Ganguly told a news channel here.

Shah Rukh seems to have given Ganguly a free hand in forming the team and designated him as captain, though a formal announcement is expected only after February 20. Asked how it felt to lead a side again, Ganguly said: “I have got that feeling.”

Ganguly also met the officials of Red Chillies Entertainment, Shah Rukh’s company, which won the franchise for the Kolkata team. The officials came to Eden Gardens for a reconnaissance on Monday and looked satisfied with their inspection.

Gilchrist has always been on Ganguly’s wish list.

“Obviously when one builds a team, he wants to pick the best side. I am no exception. They are all great players,” he said of the other six players.

“I am really excited about the IPL. I have played some Twenty20 games during my county stint. I am looking forward to the new challenge.”

The name and jersey of the Kolkata team is yet to be decided. Renowned pop singer Usha Uthup will sing the theme song.
