Will also get into seven African countries via Norway’s Reime, which it acquired recently

MUMBAI: Acme Tele Power, founded by first generation entrepreneur Manoj Upadhyay, plans to expand its overseas presence substantially.

On the cards is a foray into Europe and seven African countries, Upadhyay told DNA Money in an email interview.

“Acme’s recent acquisition of Reime of Norway has not only extended our product portfolio but has also ensured our presence in seven African countries where we are expanding substantially. We plan to expand our overseas operations,” he said.

The seven African countries include Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Congo, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, he said.

Meanwhile, Acme continues to profit from the need for infrastructure among Indian telecom companies, too. “I believe India’s telecom sector will continue to experience high growth,” Upadhyay said.

Acme, which has clocked a turnover of Rs640 crore, will use the Indian experience to increase market share in the global passive telecommunications infrastructure solutions industry.

“We consider our key international markets to be locations where operators experience power supply and climatic conditions similar to those in India,” said Upadhyay.

Upadhyay, who hails from Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, started his career as a research engineer at Benning GmbH.

The first start-up came by chance, when on a holiday to Rishikesh he discovered that the local telephone exchange had to be shut for most part of the day because of load shedding. Sensing an opportunity, he along with two of his close confidantes, started Adhunik Power System in 1999 with a capital of Rs 2 lakh. The company clocked a turnover of Rs 30 crore by 2004-05, when he decided to hand over the company to his partners and start Acme Tele.

The Rs 640 crore company entered a business and easily occupied an important slot when Bharti Airtel and other telecom service providers looked desperately for telecom infrastructure providers.

It now plans to exploit opportunities in mature markets, such as Europe and the United States and expand its ‘retro-fitment business.’

While the country’s rapidly expanding wireless telecommunications market will continue to contribute to its topline, Upadhyay says, “Going forward, wireless broadband through Wi-Max and 3G is expected to support increased investment in wireless networks.”

Acme is also eyeing the carbon credits market to increase its profitability. It has a few popular products in the telecommunications space such as the patented ‘Green Shelter’, ‘Thermal Management System’ and ‘Air Conditioning with Free Cooling Unit’ solutions, which help improve efficiencies and simultaneously reduce energy costs by up to 40% for the operators.

Going forward, analysts expect Acme to continue growing at a breakneck speed as it diversifies into newer products and markets.
