Tiwary blames jet lag for poor show but is ready now

MELBOURNE: “I work on instinct. It was an instinctive decision,” said Mahendra Singh Dhoni, justifying his decision to include Manoj Tiwary in the playing XI for the first ODI in Brisbane.

Tiwary is here as a 17th member of the squad, more precisely, as a cover for an injured Yuvraj Singh. But Dhoni picked Tiwary in the XI ahead of regulars like Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik.

So, Tiwary, having travelled for over 30 hours — from Kolkata to Mumbai, from Sydney to Brisbane — had to pad even before he unpacked. Jet lag, what is that?

No wonder, Dhoni’s instinct didn’t really click. A bleary eyed-eyed Tiwary sleepwalked into the middle when the best Australian bowler was in operation.

Brett Lee, who was in the midst of a lethal spell, made him dance to his rhythm. A few scorchers, a few bouncers and then a yorker. He was gone. Lee had career-best figures of 5-27 in that match. Tiwary had no answers to Lee’s probing spell. But now the 19-year-old believes he has found the answers to tackling the best fast bowler and his cronies.

“I would be lying if I say I was fully prepared for the game. I was yet to overcome the jet lag and there I was facing Lee,” Tiwary said. He faced 16 balls for his two runs. The jet lag is gone and he is prepared for another shot at Lee.

The struggle has taught him a few lessons on the game.

“International cricket is obviously different from domestic game. You might get one bad ball in two overs at the international level. In the domestic cricket you can get two bad balls in one over. So in international cricket you have to be alert for the bad ball and you also have to be selective about the shots.”

Tiwary also spent some quality time with Sachin Tendulkar, who has told him how to prepare for a match. “Now, I know what should be my mindset before and during the game. I’ve to be more patient. When a bowler is bowling well, I should show respect. I can’t go there and play my shots.”

Now that Yuvraj is back in the side, what are his chances? “I can’t say. I don’t know if I will play tomorrow (on Sunday). But I can surely say if I get one more chance it will be different,” Tiwary remarked. “I’m just looking for another chance. I’m ready.”

But the question is when will the Indian skipper be instinctive again?
