Format is designed to provide India’s female talent with experience and exposure

MUMBAI: The men’s challenger series has unearthed found many of India’s current young crop of cricketing talent, like Sreesanth, Piyush Chawla, Suresh Raina and Robin Uthappa, who have all gone to represent India at the highest level.

In a bid to improve women’s cricket, the Indian Cricket Board has organised a Challenger Trophy based on the format of men’s tournament, which will start from February 9 at Mumbai Cricket Association’s Bandra-Kurla Complex.

Mithali Raj, who made a record breaking 1500-plus runs in women’s cricket this season and is also the captain of India C feels it’s the best opportunity for both the young and experienced players. “I am glad and I believe this is the best platform for us to show our skills,” said Raj.

“It will not only help build our team for the forthcoming tournaments but also help unveil new talents in the country. There are good young girl cricketers in our country and I want them to have access to the best showcase for their talents, and force their way into the team,” she added.

The world’s fastest bowler in women’s cricket, Jhulan Goswami, who also won the ICC player of the year award last year, said “it is one of the best opportunities a player can get. We struggled to get these kinds of tournaments in our day, but the new generation will be lucky to have this.

The younger players are lucky to rub shoulders with experienced players like Mithali Raj, Hemlata Kala and myself, and I feel they should use this opportunity as a stepping stone towards an India cap. It will not only help the young players but also the older players as we will get to know each other,” added Jhulan, who also leads the India ‘A’ side. The BCCI, however, did not allot any prize money for the tournament saying that it would do so later.
