The Dahisar police on Monday arrested Maya Parekh, 37, alias Madhu Trivedi and her daughter Priya Parekh, 19, alias Pooja Trivedi for conning an elderly man for parting with valuable antiques and gemstones.

The police are on the lookout of Maya’s second daughter Hema Parekh, 17, alias Neelam Trivedi, who is also a suspect in the case.

Police said Maya and Priya, on January 25, approached Dinesh Sarvayya, 68, a Dahisar resident, as prospective buyers for the antiques and gems that had been collected by his forefathers.

“They looked sophisticated and claimed they were in touch with foreigners who were interested in buying such antiques,” said Sarvayya’s son Amit.

On their first visit, they bought items worth Rs5,000. The duo returned a few days later to buy the rest of the valuables. While Sarvayya asked for Rs17 lakhs, Maya promised to fetch him Rs30-40 lakh. They took the antiques and handed over Rs5 lakh cheque, promising to return with the balance.

However, when the Corporation Bank cheque they had given bounced, Sarvayya and Amit approached the bank’s Borivili branch, where they learnt that the address given to the bank was wrong.

While they were still at the bank, Pooja approached the bank manager saying she had lost her cheques. “When Sarvayya confronted her, she threatened to file a molestation case against him. Sarvayya then filed a complaint with the Dahisar police,” said DCP Shivaji Bodke.

While a few valuables were seized from their Dahisar residence, others were found in a flat in Kandivili. “The women, using different aliases, have been involved in cheating other people. They might have several accomplices,” said Bodke.
