Says country experienced worst terror attacks under him

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Thursday questioned LK Advani’s track record as home minister and claimed that Afzal Guru, the main accused in the parliament attack, had been picked up and then released by the NDA government two months before the incident.

The Congress also sought to rebut Advani’s criticism of the internal security in the country under the UPA government by pointing out that all the major terrorist attacks took place at a time when he was at the helm of the home ministry.

Party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi asked the former deputy prime minister to explain the “reasons for the sudden capitulation before the Taliban on December 31, 1999”. He also reminded the former home minister that it was under him that “three dreaded terrorists — Maulana Masood Azhar, Omar Sheikh and Zargar — were escorted all the way to Kandehar by the foreign minister”.

Accusing the former deputy prime minister of double-speak, the Congress asked the BJP to explain why the NDA government failed to prevent, control or abort attacks on Akshardham, Raghunath Mandir, Indian parliament and the Red Fort.

The swift Congress response appears to be part of the new strategy to respond strongly to issues raised by the BJP rather than allow it to get away with its point of view. “We need to nail their lies in the bud. We do not believe in politicising such issues, but sometimes it is necessary to bring facts before the people,” said AICC media cell chief Veerappa Moily.
