SP leaders accused of influencing judiciary

NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh chief minister and his close confidante Amar Singh are locked in a serious legal problem as the supreme court on Thursday issued notices to them seeking to know why contempt proceedings shouldn’t be initiated against them over their taped conversations that sought to influence the high court judges dealing with the BSP legislators’ defection case two years ago.

After about half-an-hour of proceedings, the court issued a notice to Samajwadi party general secretary Amar Singh on a petition seeking lifting prohibition on the print and electronic media from publishing the transcript of Singh’s alleged tape conversations with a number of important people.

The apex court had in 2006 restrained the media from publishing the sensational transcripts after DNA published a part of them. Expressing concern at the contents of conversation between the then CM and his associate Singh regarding seeking favour from the Allahabad high court judges, petitioner Devender Mandavawala from Mumbai said both Yadav and Singh had undermined the majesty of law and interfered with the administration of justice. His counsel KTS Tulsi said: “If someone tries to manipulate the judiciary, he doesn’t deserve any consideration.”

Tulsi’s contention assumes significance as Amar Singh himself had approached the apex court seeking ban on publication of the taped conversations and also sought guidelines for tapping phones. Solicitor general Goolam E Vahanvati said the Centre had framed guidelines and Singh’s petition be disposed of. That would also end confusion whether media can make the conversations public.
