NEW DELHI: Narendra Modi left BJP chief Rajnath Singh spellbound as he sold 'brand Modi' at the party National Executive meeting here on Sunday.

Singh, who had dropped Modi from the Parliamentary Board almost a year ago, on Sunday sang peans for the Gujarat Chief Minister, who was the star at the day-long meeting.

He even went to the extent of asking other party Chief Ministers to emulate Modi and retain power in their respective states to pass the 'agni-pariksha' (trial by fire).

Singh's praise of Modi is virtually seen as an acceptance of Modi's growing stature in the party, much to the chagrin of second rung leaders.

"The victory of Gujarat has silenced all our opponents," Singh told the party's National Executive here.

He said the victory has sent a positive message with regard to the BJP's ideological commitment and our ability in the field of development.

"We have shattered the myth in Gujarat that BJP government cannot return to power twice or thrice. Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Rajasthan should also try to repeat this kind of success," he said.

Singh noted that in 2007 the party snatched Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakahand from the Congress kitty.

"At the same time in Gujarat, we maintained our government in a prestigious contest," he noted.

Modi also drew a standing ovation for several minutes when he was called to the dais at the Executive.

Incidentally, Modi does not figure in the high-level team constituted by Singh to oversee the party's preparations for the elections in states this year and to Lok Sabha in early 2009.
