NEW DELHI: Under consistent attack from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, Congress on Monday signalled that it was not averse to accepting Samajwadi Party Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's offer for cooperation.

"If Yadav is serious, he is entitled to talk at the appropriate levels with Congress and need not talk to us through the press," party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said.

He, however, preceded his remark by saying that it was but natural that engagement of Congress with any party has to be a "matter of understanding and trust".

The reference was obviously to the withdrawal of support by the Samajwadi Party (SP) to the Congress-led coalition at the Centre few months back. The party was an outside supporter of the Government and the two parties were at loggerheads in Uttar Pradesh where Yadav was in power till the Assembly elections sometime back.

AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh, who is in-charge of party affairs in Uttar Pradesh, struck a similar note expressing readiness for cooperation with SP on specific issues in the state.

Talking to reporters separately, Singh said Yadav should specify on which issues there could be cooperation.

The Congress reaction came a day after Yadav, whose party is the main opposition in the state, sought support from the Congress and BJP on "public issues" against the state government.

It also came at a time when the honeymoon between the Congress and BSP has come to an end and Mayawati has accused certain Congress leaders of conspiring to eliminate her. She has threatened that her party would withdraw support to the UPA government.
