Delhi collects over Rs 76 billion in taxes

The Indian capital has collected Rs.76.75 billion ($1.9 billion) in taxes during first eight months of financial year 2007-08.

NEW DELHI: The Indian capital has collected Rs.76.75 billion ($1.9 billion) in taxes during first eight months of financial year 2007-08, 13 percent more than in the same period last fiscal.

Delhi Finance and Planning Minister A.K. Walia said Monday: "Rs.76.75 billion was collected up to November 2007 against Rs.67.91 billion during the corresponding period of last financial year."

Walia further stated there has been an increase of 29 percent in entertainment tax, 24 percent in taxes on vehicles, 22 percent in stamps and registration fees and 14 percent in luxury tax. 

With a total collection of Rs.54.68 billion in value-added tax (VAT) in the first eight months of the current fiscal, the capital registered an increase of 11.08 percent compared with the same period the previous year.

The minister said that Rs.377.6 million was collected as entertainment tax against Rs.293.8 million in the corresponding period last year.

Similarly, Rs.3.05 billion came from taxes on vehicles against Rs.2.45 billion during the previous financial year.

While Rs.8.21 billion came from stamps and registration fees, Rs.2.22 billion came from luxury tax.

There has been increase of 16.37 percent in collection of other taxes and duties on commodities and services.

There was an increase of 69.47 percent in betting tax. The collection was Rs.39.3 million against Rs.23.2 million in the previous corresponding period.

Walia expressed confidence that collection of revenue receipts of Delhi government would continue to increase as his government has been implementing "trader-friendly and people-friendly policies".
