NEW DELHI: Rizwanur Rahman committed suicide and was not murdered.

This is what the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has concluded after over a two-month study on the death of the 27-year-old whose marriage to Priyanka Todi kept the Kolkata grapevine busy.

The CBI will present its final report to the Kolkata High Court on January 8. Officials say Rizwanur killed himself following harassment by Priyanka’s father, Ashok Todi and his brother Pradeep.

The duo may be charged for abetting his death. Sources said that the Todis had paid Rizwanur’s family friend, Syed Mohiuddin alias Pappu Rs11 lakh to talk him out of meeting Priyanka.

The two married on August 18 and just a little over a month later, on September 21, the young man’s body was found on a railway track.

“We are basing our report on the forensic evidence and telephone records of Rizwanur,” said a CBI official. He added two train guards had seen him jump in front of a train.

The agency had carried out three dummy tests of the train accident and sent the findings to forensic experts.

“We have also found discrepancies in the police investigations and would recommend departmental action against erring police officials,” added the officer. The poice had concluded that he committed suicide.
