MUMBAI: Stating that the Juhu molestation case involving two NRI women was 'sensitive', state's Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil on Friday said that his government will seek setting up of a fast-track court for expeditious trial in the matter.

"It is a sensitive matter and we have got nearly all the accused persons in the case. Those guilty shall be given a severe punishment and without wasting any time. We will request the High Court for permission to set up a fast track court," Patil, who also holds the Home portfolio said.

Maharashtra will also be writing to the Centre for an enhancement of punishment in crimes like molestation.

Patil chaired a high-level meeting at the city police headquarters attended by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Chitkala Zutshi and senior police officers, including Commissioner of Police D N Jadhav.

He, however, said that it was a 'routine review' meeting, where the law and order situation in the city and other issues were discussed, but appealed that the Juhu incident not be discussed as all the accused have been held.

Patil also admitted that the police was late in filing complaint in the incident.

"We cannot come to a conclusion saying that nobody follows the law in Mumbai due to the antics of 5-6 people. Similarly, going into the lapses, if any, will demoralise the police force. We must rather work towards avoiding such incidents in the future."

There was a public outcry after the incident of molestation of two NRI women outside a five-star hotel in suburban Juhu hit the headlines. Fourteen suspects have since been arrested in the case.
