HASSAN: A 35-year-old police constable was thrashed by a group of people today for allegedly raping a 13-year-old school girl at Basavanahalli village in Karnataka's Hassan district.

The constable, identified as Sashi, allegedly dragged the girl who was waiting for a bus at a bus stop to a nearby railway track and sexually assaulted her, Superintendent of Police Panduranga Rane told here.

On hearing the scream of the girl, passersby rushed to the scene and beat up the constable before alerting the police about the ghastly incident.

As the police tried to cover up the face of their colleague to avoid public glare, the group of people insisted that he be paraded before the onlookers.

The accused has been arrested and suspended from service, Rane said.
