3 excise officials arrested for accepting bribe

Three officials of Central Excise Department were arrested by the CBI for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh from a business house.

NEW DELHI: Three officials of Central Excise Department, including an Assistant Commissioner, were on Tuesday arrested by the CBI for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh from a business house.
    
According to CBI, the three -- Assistant Commissioner Subash Narain, Superintendent Sanjay Kumar Singh and Inspector Hari Chand -- were arrested after the CBI laid a trap following a complaint filed by J V Industries Limited.
    
The three were demanding a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from the business house for submitting a favourable report about the raid conducted by them at the premises of the J V Industries on December 19 last year, CBI sources said.
    
The Anti-corruption branch of the CBI laid a trap and arrested Singh and Chand for allegedly taking a bribe amount of Rs 2.5 lakh as first instalment towards the bribe amount, they said.
    
During investigation, role of Narain, who was the supervisory officer of the two, also came to fore. He was also arrested.
    
Immediately after their arrest, CBI conducted searches at their residence and official premises.
