SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir police on Monday claimed to have solved a case of 'fake' kidnapping staged by a teenager from the outskirts of the city along with five other boys, who have all been arrested.

The plan, masterminded by 13-year-old Ahsanul Haq and his cousin Jamsheed Hussain, came to light after the boys informed their family that they have been set free by their kidnappers, Senior Superintendent of Police S Mujtaba said.

On December 27, businessman Ghulam Hassan Najar of Methan locality of Chanapora in uptown city informed police that his son (Ahsanul) was missing from his home, the SSP said.

Najar later received a call demanding a ransom of Rs five lakh or his son will be killed, he said, adding the phone call was traced to a PCO in Pampore area of Pulwama district. On December 28, Najar again received ransom call from a mobile, which was stolen from Jehangir Chowk.

On the same day, Ahsanul called his father and told that he and Jamsheed were released by the alleged kidnappers at Panzinoora on Srinagar-Bandipora road, Mujtaba said.

During questioning, the boys narrated that they were kidnapped by unidentified gunmen in a car from Methan and taken to some unknown destination.

They were threatened to be killed if they tried to escape, the boys claimed adding later they were handcuffed and released near Panzinoora, Mujtaba said.

However, police got suspicious when the boys showed different places when asked to identify the location from where they were kidnapped. When questioned further, Haq accepted that he along with his cousin made a plan to grab money from his father.

Jamsheed took help of one computer shop owner Sheikh Muzamil Amin of Elahibagh locality here and his friend Bilal Ahmad Bhat of Wanbal for making fake kidnapping possible, the SSP said.

Next day, Muzamil with the help of his friends Touseef Wani and Adil Mehmood snatched a mobile phone from Jehangir Chowk and used it to make the ransom call, Mujtaba said.

He said since Najar was not in a position to give Rs five lakhs immediately, they reduced ransom amount to Rs 50,000. But as he could only manage to arrange Rs 20,000, it annoyed them.

As the boys came to know that police was following the case, they decided to drop the plan and returned home, the SSP said.
