CHENNAI: Refuting allegations by opposition AIADMK, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Sunday said that there were no discrepencies in the distribution of colour TV sets by the state government.

Karunanidhi in a statement said that the government had set aside Rs 750 crore for procuring colour TV sets.

"Though the government had set aside Rs 750 crore, it had spent only Rs 685 crore and the remaining funds were in the government coffers only," he said.

After discussions with the manufacturers of colour TV sets, the government could procure them at reduced rates. This in turn led to the purchase of 4.25 lakh TV sets, in addition to the 30 lakh sets bought earlier.

"Jealous of growing popularity of the DMK government, she was issuing statements against the programme day in and day out," he said.

AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa, in a statement on Saturday, had termed the tv scheme "as an act deceiving people". She had also alleged that the scheme would lead to malpractices.
