Malls go the extra mile to woo customers and spread Christmas cheer

MUMBAI: Santa Claus arrived in an auto rickshaw at a shopping mall in Kandivili. The mall adopted the theme to celebrate Christmas with the common man. Another mall in Andheri (west) decided to don a new colour this season. Though the entire city was painted cherry red on Tuesday, the mall took to cool blue. And whether it was the interior decorations or designer party wear, everything in the swank three-storey mall was painted in various shades of blue.

The mall also tried to break the traditional rule of Santa with a flowing white beard and sporting a red dress. The sales manager of the Kandivili mall, Sheetal, said, “This year the theme centres on the common man. We want to reach out to everyone, people from every strata of the society. There has been a cent per cent rise in the number of customers visiting us during festivals and on holidays. Whether it is Worli, Mulund or Dadar, every shopping mall appeared to have gone the extra mile to attract everyone.”

Several other malls had lavish spread on offer. While one mall transformed an entire floor to look like Chowpatty, complete with chats, bhelpuri and ragda pattice, another decided to go for international cuisines. A few even had diet foot, including sugar-free chocolates and candies.

Pradep Nalawade, the customer service executive at Shoppers Stop in Juhu, said, “This Christmas, we want to promote Hollywood and Bollywood music through CDs and VCDs. We also have a special segment exclusively for children. The usual Christmas tree and jingle bells are a part of the celebrations.”

Almost every mall had local bands or guitarists to entertain the children. Also, as part of a marketing strategy, several malls had special zones selling a variety of desi and foreign chocolates.

Designer candles, including the therapeutic ones with soothing fragrance, were an added attraction this Christmas.
