MUMBAI: In a unique initiative, BEST will run a women’s-only bus service on a commercial segment route in the city from Friday.

The service, under route no 415 between Andheri (East) and MIDC-Seepz, will be inaugurated by Mayor Shubha Raul and the deputy mayor.

At present, there is a ‘women only’ bus service in the city from Borivili station to Ashokvan, twice each during the morning and evening rush hours. “But that is on a residential route where it takes women commuters home after they come from a connecting women’s only train,” said Milind Gawabe, additional general manager, BEST.

The new bus service will run on the similar lines as the first one. Chairman Sanjay Potnis said, “The single decker bus service will cater to working women who face lot of problem getting into the buses particularly during the rush hour,” he added.

The timing of the service will be made clear after taking suggestions from the woman commuters. The bus will run early in the morning from Andheri station and will run twice for morning shift workers. It will also drive back passengers in two shifts in the evening.
