Faulty refrigerator compressor bursts on a VT-bound train. People panic as they thought it was a bomb blast

MUMBAI: A VT-bound train coming in from Panvel, was just about pulling in at the Cotton Green station, when a two-kilo refrigerator compressor burst. It must have reminded the passengers of the 7/11 blasts as three passengers panicked and jumped from the train. A few passengers who were inside the luggage compartment ran away. “It was a small blast due to a passenger carrying a faulty refrigerator compressor.

The victims should be discharged by evening,” said deputy commissioner of police Vasant Koregaonkar. The railway police said that the casualties were less as it was a Saturday.

Amanullah Ibrahim Khan (72) had minor head injuries, Dattaram Govind Karudkar (32) and Sudhama Sharma (25) suffered minor bruises on hands and legs. They were admitted with minor injuries at Ambedkar hospital in Byculla (W). “There were at least 50 people in the compartment when we heard a big explosion. I collided with the pole at the entrance of the compartment. There was panic all around for a while,” he said.

Dattaram also added that the other passengers panicked as smoke filled the compartment. The passenger carrying the compressor couldn’t be identified. He ran away immediately after the blast. The Central Railway PRO AK Singh was unavailable for comment. The hospital also did not allow the media to talk to patients. The police did not have any additional information to give to the media.
