NEW DELHI: The CPI(M) politburo meeting here on Thursday, followed by a two-day central committee meet, would inter alia discuss the latest CBI leak on the “involvement” of party cadre in the Nandigram violence, amid speculation that the UPA government may use the dope to arm-twist the Marxists who are tooth and nail opposing the India-US nuclear deal.

The meetings will also discuss the contours of the just-concluded India-specific safeguard talks between Atomic Energy Commission chairman Anil Kakodkar and the International Atomic Energy Commission in Vienna.

The main agenda of the meet is to finalise the draft political resolution for the upcoming party congress at Coimbatore, assessing the costs and benefits of propping up the UPA government and whether to continue with this arrangement beyond the 14th Lok Sabha.

The party is expected to discuss the Nandigram imbroglio and steps to salvage its image which has taken a beating in the wake police firing at peasants opposing land acquisition.

Sources said the party is extremely peeved with the Centre for the CBI-inspired “leaks” in the media that CPI(M) cadre donning police uniform fired at protestors and even raped a few women.

Former Rajya Sabha MP and central committee member Nilotpal Basu lambasted the CBI for trying to “demonise” the CPI(M).
He wondered how “a classified report which should have been placed before the Calcutta high court in a sealed envelope made its way to the press. Who gave it? In any case there are several factual inaccuracies in the report that appeared in a section of the media. Why does the CBI need to do this? I am not very clear what is the purpose of the CBI – if it is to blemish, deride and demonise the CPI(M).

Basu said it was “part of a larger political conspiracy”.

The West Bengal government has, meanwhile, filed an FIR against the CBI and CRPF. The Khejuri police station has registered a case against unknown CBI and CRPF officials for destroying a woman’s house.
