VADODARA/AHMEADABAD: A day before the polling, political parties went all out to woo voters in Vadodara and Ahmedabad.

Sale of cricket kits and carom boards has gone up during the last few days in Vadodara. Political parties are purchasing such items in bulk for distribution to woo the youth.

With the model code of conduct in force, political parties have stopped campaigning.

But after trying out ‘dining and wining’ ploy, party workers are now busy in distribution of freebies — which also include clothes and utensils. The distributions are being made individually as well as during group meetings.

A party worker said, “The tradition of distribution of freebies during elections is not new.”

According to him, carom boards are being mainly distributed in the old city where the youth demand it, while cricket kits are being distributed in societies and at the outskirts of the city.

A local sports goods dealer, Nimeshbhai, said: “Party workers are buying sports items in bulk.” According to him, about 200 carom boards and 300 cricket kits are being purchased by party workers every day.

A large number of voters across Ahmedabad city are being given cash and gifts of their choice.

“We have been receiving liquor regularly for the last three days at party offices in our locality,” said a resident of Kalupur, Mehmood Pathan. He, along with others, has been gifted other things such as home appliances, clothes and fashion accessories.

“A vehicle full of liquor comes to each and every BJP office and distributes country and foreign liquor to be distributed later,” said Abdul Pathan in Kalupur.
