The aim is also to dent Modi’s popularity among women

AHMEDABAD: The Congress and Sardar Patel Utkarsh Samiti unleashed a major ad campaign that targets among other things, Modi’s huge following with women. On ad sponsored by the Sardar Patel Utkarsh Samiti, the outfit floated by BJP rebels now contesting on Congress tickets shows a troupe of  Israeli dancers performing at the Vibrant Gujarat function in short skirts that expose their legs, with a message next to it saying, “Nari shakti nu aavu apmaan karnar ne mat?” (How can you vote for someone who insults women?)

Women have flocked to Modi’s rallies in large numbers with an estimated 57.19 per cent of voters in the first phase being women.

BJP leaders including Modi, LK Advani, Arun Jaitley, Om Mathur and Surendra Patel went into a huddle Saturday for three hours to analyse the fallout of the Congress campaign. BJP’s election in-charge Kakubhai Patel said his party is not worried. When asked what the BJP’s response would be, he said, “Our ad campaign will go on as planned on Sunday.”

The Congress ads also target the BJP’s accusation that the Congress has been going soft on terrorism.

The other ads were on the failure of Modi’s government to complete the Narmada project and a letter of former CM Madhavsinh Solanki urging people to vote for the Congress because it stands for development and social justice.

Meanwhile, Congress has said it is confident of winning between 115 to 119 seats in the state’s assembly and will form the next government. Five senior Congress leaders - Bharatsinh Solanki, Arjun Modhwadia, Shankersinh Vaghela, Dinsha Patel and BK Hariprasad addressed the media in a show of unity on Saturday evening. MP Dinsha Patel said, “The Modi government has been wrongly taking credit for development work  funded by the Centre.

The party also released a National Productivity Council report, which found the performance of Modi’s key departments that include Law & order, education, tribal development, home, information department, sports and cultural activities,  and Narmada as unsatisfactory.
