Gulbano’s illness and her husband’s ailments may have driven her to suicide

MUMBAI: A 60-year-old housewife committed suicide by jumping from the 10th floor of Amina Building at Null Bazaar, JJ Marg, on Saturday. The police suspect that the elderly woman took the extreme step out of
frustration.

The deceased has been identified as Gulbano Haji Mohammad Siddiqui Kapadiya.

According to the police, Kapadiya was a diabetic and was suffering from various ailments.

Her husband is also a diabetic and has been bedridden for over two years. She is survived by six children. Her daughter Salma, 39, lives with her parents along with two of her own children.

“The family went to sleep on Friday night and when Salma’s son Ahmed, 16, woke up to leave for college on Saturday, he found his grandmother missing. He informed the other family members including his uncle Afzal, who resides on the 11th floor of the same building,” said police sub-inspector A Pawar, JJ Marg police station.

Pawar added that, the Kapadiyas searched every possible place, but their efforts were in vain.

“At around 8.30am, Salma looked out of the window of their 10th floor residence and spotted Kapadiya’s body on the wooden shade built between the ground floor and first floor. They then informed the police.

Her body was then taken to JJ Hospital for a post-mortem. Initial investigation revealed that she died of haemorrhage and multiple injuries. It appears to be a case of suicide,” Pawar said, adding that the body has been returned to the family.

According to the police, Kapadiya first fell on the top of a nearby building and then on the wooden shade of her building.

When asked what could have driven Kapadiya to end her life, Pawar said “Her husband was bedridden and her daughter was a divorcee. This could have driven her to end her life.”
