North freezes, city may shiver soon

MUMBAI: Bring out those woollens, folks, for that nip in the air is likely to get a little chillier over the next three days.

The minimum temperature recorded in the past few days was in the region of 18º Celsius, which weather bureau officials say is close to the “normal” winter temperature.

“But the temperature might fall a couple of degrees in the next three days,” said the duty officer at the Regional Meteorological Centre, Colaba.

“Strong winds blowing in from the north are the reason,” said Dr CVV Bhadram, deputy director-general of the centre.

North India is experiencing severe cold and snowfall has been reported in Jammu and Himachal Pradesh. Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi are also going through a very cold phase.

Last winter, the lowest temperature recorded in the city was 15.5ºC. That was on January 1, 2007.

This season, Santa Cruz has already reported a temperature as low as 14ºC. That was on November 24, which remains the coldest day of the season so far.

But the temperature will have to really dip dangerously for Mumbai to come close to its coldest day. That was more than four decades ago on January 22, 1962, when the temperature plummeted to 7.4ºC.
