MORENA (MP): The death of over two dozen alligators in the Chambal National Park here in the last few days has sent the forest officials and park administration into a tizzy.

The recovery of bodies of two dozen large snouted amphibians from the protected area of the park is worrying the forest officials. They have sent the viscera of the dead animals, after post-mortem, to the laboratory to know the exact cause behind death, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) S P Sharma said on Friday.

He said almost same number of alligators were found dead in Sehso area in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.

It seems they are suffering from some unknown disease, he said adding the exact cause of the death will be known only after receiving the culture report.

Park's Superintendent, S C Bhadoria ruled out any foul play in the death of the alligators. No injury marks were found on the bodies of the dead animals, he said.

Also, mixing poison by some poacher in the river water is not possible as other animals too are drinking the same water and they are safe, he said.
