SRINAGAR: The ghost of suicides has once again returned to haunt security forces in Jammu and Kashmir. Three suicides in the past three days have rattled the army and para-military forces in the state.

Lance Naik LP Sahu of 41 field regiment committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan of his camp in Jammu on Wednesday after he was discharged from hospital where he was treated for hypertension. “We have ordered a court of inquiry. The cause will be known once the report arrives,” said Lt Col SD Goswami, defence spokesman at Jammu.

Earlier, BSF soldier Binod Kumar of 26 battalion ended his life at Akhnoor sector by shooting himself with his service rifle. A fellow soldier said he had taken leave some days ago and recently joined back.

A CRPF jawan posted in National Institute of Technology, Srinagar, allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself from his service revolver in his camp. Prabhakar Tripathy, CRPF spokesman, said a probe will be conducted into the “mysterious death” of the soldier.

“He had to report to his post at 6 pm but at 5.50 pm he was found dead in his room. A bullet had pierced through his throat. We have ordered an inquiry,” said Tripathy.

This year, 10 CRPF men have committed suicides in Kashmir valley alone. The figure in the army is much higher because its troops are deployed to remote areas, where they have no contact with their families.

“Depression is the main cause for the suicides. We have treated several para military soldiers suffering from stress in the Vallley, said Dr Arshad Hussain, senior consultant Government Psychiatry hospital Srinagar.

Alarmed by the growing number of suicides, the CRPF has now launched a programme to de-stress soldiers. “We are planning to counsel both soldiers and their families and help them cope with domestic issues. We have seen that domestic problems drive these soldiers to suicides,” said the CRPF spokesman.
