BANGALORE: India earned the dubious distinction of giving away most number of extras, 76, in a Test innings while Dinesh Kaarthick became the country's highest bye-conceding Test wicketkeeper, missing the all-time ignominious record by just two runs.

Kaarthick, who donned the role of the keeper in the third Test against Pakistan due to injury to regular stumper M S Dhoni, had a terrible time behind the stumps as he contributed 35 byes in the first innings total of 537.

He overtook England's Matt Prior (33) to become second in the list of highest bye-conceding stumpers. Prior's forgettable record came in the Oval Test against India, who went on to score 664, earlier this year.

Another Englishman Frank Woolley holds the record of letting through most byes in a Test innings with his tally of 37 in a total of 327 by Australia in 1934.

Though Kaarthick fell short of the all-time record, he surpassed Budhi Kunderan's record of 29 byes against England in Kanpur in 1964.

Anil Kumble's men, meanwhile, beat the most extras record held by West Indies for almost 20 years. The Windies had given away 71 extras against Pakistan in 1988 in Georgetown, Guyana.

Apart from Kaarthick's misses, Indian extras -- the third highest contributor to the Pakistani total in the ongoing match -- included 26 leg-byes and 15 no balls.
