PUDUCHERRY: Australia has developed an innovative technology for storage of foodgrains which could be used in India to prevent about 30 per cent loss of grains due to spillage, Consul General of Australia in Chennai Aminur Rahman has said.

Presently there was an estimated 30 per cent loss due to spillage of the grains in India and if this was curbed there could be excellent opportunity for attaining self-sufficiency in food production in India, he said on the sidelines of a seminar 'Doing Business with Australia' on Friday.

Australia also proposed to hold road shows during February-March next year in India to showcase opportunities and avenues for investment there, Rahman, who is also the Trade Commissioner of Australia in South India, said.

He said India had emerged as the fourth biggest export market for Australia, accounting to nearly $11 billion. There were several promising sectors for joint ventures.

The education sector has also emerged as a main area of cooperation between the two countries as over 40,000 Indian students were currently studying in Australia, he said.

He said Australia could also provide a value added competitive solution and expertise both in traditional and emerging sectors for business activities in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Rahman said the Australian Trade Commission had formulated a very focused sector-specific strategy to offer Australian technology, expertise and solutions for Indian businessmen in various areas including health, tourism, mining, energy and information communication technology, financial services film and media.

He said the tourism sector was growing fast in Australia and the inflow of tourists registered a 33 per cent increase during 2005-06 over the previous year.

A seminar would be held in June in Puducherry under the joint efforts of Australian Trade Commission and CII to focus the various potential areas for investments, he said.

An Australian delegation would be brought to South India, particularly Puducherry as a follow up of his current visit here.

S Chinnasamy, Chairman, CII Puducherry, said his organisation was keenly interested in working with Australia to realise the investment potential for the two countries.
