Renowned painter Charan Sharma pays obeisance to the great master and teacher, Lord Buddha in his latest series of paintings and glass sculptures. For the painter, there cannot be any other way.

A well-established and much respected name in the world of Indian Contemporary Art, Charan Sharma was born into a family of artists in a small town in Mewar, Rajasthan.

Charan Sharma can’t seem to  get enough of Lord Buddha into his life and surroundings. Only recently he had two exhibitions of his magnificent paintings on Buddha, titled Enlightenment. With huge and lively paintings of Buddha and his followers, the halls of the Jehangir art gallery were well nigh transformed into a monastery.

‘Upasthiti’, his latest offering, is a slight shift in focus from the Lord to his worshippers and followers, the monks. Clad in saffron robes, the monks have retreated to the life of renunciation. For them, the teachings of their master is their way and life, but Charan’s paintings evoke a happiness, among the followers.

“Life, love , hope, faith — many things and experiences. Everything that one has experienced in life works its way into art. Six or seven years, I went back to meditation in the form of Vipaasna and I understood that nothing in this world exists independently. Last few years, Buddha has inspired me. These are images from my experiences of travelling in all the Buddhist destinations and reflections of the different states of awareness,” says Charan.

He has  explored various mediums, different materials and techniques, but this time he is showing 20 paintings which he has done on canvas using Acrylic colour and gold leaf. Also on view are glass sculptures done in Murano, Italy, in collaboration with maestro Silvano Signoretto.

Charan’s eye for detail, his sense  of composition, rich yet subdued use of colour, and its caressing application show his undying love for the great Master. In painting the Buddha, Charan has rediscovered himself and has mirrored the teachings of the great Master in his paintings. Go for it. Get enlightened.
