Every 200m, there’ll be a hi-tech public toilet

You will soon stop flinching at the thought of taking a leak at public toilets. Civic babus, fresh from a tour of Stuttgart and Paris, want to emulate the European style of automated and aesthetic pay and use toilets. Top BMC bosses and bureaucrats visited the two between November 28 and December 4 on an official tour.

“The public toilets there are automated and consume less space than those in our city. That kind of toilet will of help Mumbai, where space is a premium,” said Manu Srivastava, additional municipal commissioner, a tour participant. “There, you push a coin to open the door which automatically closes after detecting the presence of a person. Once inside, you will find state-of-the-art wash basis and driers. An audio instruction facility gives you tips on proper usage.”

At present, there is a shortage of 36,000 toilet seats. The civic body hopes to set up these toilets, which come in various shapes (circular, modular and hydra) and sizes, at every 200 metre. “One side of the toilet will have advertisements, while the other will have civic information.

The toilets will be maintained by private parties,” said Srivastava. “We have called international company JC Dacaux to give us more information on the toilets. And the toilet will not only make the experience of relieving yourself more comfortable, it will also improve the city’s skyline. “Digitally printing advertisements and information on the sides of the toilet will help reduce the number of billboards in the city.”

Parking: The civic body wants to go the Paris way for parking. Public amenity plots released by SRA and Mhada will have park-ing lots. More than 1.4 million cars hit the city roads daily. But the parking strength is only 8,000. “We plan to identify at least 20 such plots,” said Srivastava.
