Pips Spiritual Flame to win the inaugural Longines Classic

MUMBAI: Narendra Lagad trained and impeccably bred three-year-old gelding, Maseeha won the inaugural Longines Classic, the feature event of the Mumbai’s sixth day’s meeting held at the Mahalaxmi Race Course here on Thursday.

Placed second as the eleven runners got off the gates, this gelding was ridden by Nadeem Alam and beat Spiritual Flame  by 1 and ¼ lengths to receive the glittering trophy from Bollywood fame Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. When asked whom he would credit the victory to, this jockey aptly put it, “It’s definitely Maseeha who made this happen.”

Star Crusader was the initial leader followed by Maseeha, and maintained the same pairing till the bend in the journey of a mile and a furlong race (1800m).

Star Crusader slowly faded after setting the pace as Maseeha took over. There was a sudden burst of rush as the race was just 200 meters away from the winning post, but Maseeha maintained his cool to win comfortable with a time of 1:53.8, just 3.8 seconds more than the record time of 1:50 seconds.
