LONDON: The wife of the man who came back from the ‘dead’ has confessed that she knew her husband was alive and had been living with him in Panama.

Anne Darwin, 55-year-old wife of John Darwin, admitted that the photograph of her and her ‘dead’ husband taken at a flat in Panama 18-months ago was real, and that she had lied hours earlier when she showed shock and surprise as John walked into a London police station claiming he was ‘missing person.’

“It looks as if I am going to be left without a husband, a home or a family now,” Anne told a British newspaper. Her devastating confession came just as British police questioned her 57-year-old husband after he was arrested from his son’s home in Basingstoke for fraud on Wednesday morning.

The former science teacher is alleged to have faked his own death five years ago so that he and his wife could cash in on his insurance policies. Only six weeks ago, Anne sold their family properties worth £5,00,000 and moved to Panama for good.

Anne claimed that she had initially believed Darwin died in a North Sea canoe tragedy in 2002 and said it was ‘quite some time’ before she discovered he was really still alive. She admitted that she had pocketed her husband’s insurance policies after an inquest in 2003 declared he was dead, but refused to disclose the amount.

Reading their mother’s confession, Darwin’s two sons issued a statement that they had no idea of their father’s fraud and had believed all along that he was dead. They claimed they were angry and confused and didn’t want to have anything more to do with either of their parents.

Meanwhile doctors in the UK have declared Darwin medically fit, enabling the police to begin their questioning. After walking into a police station at the weekend, Darwin had claimed he was suffering from amnesia and could remember nothing about the last seven years — that is from two years before he disappeared. His wife said it was ‘possible’ he had suffered some kind of breakdown. Anne is now preparing to return to the UK to face the music.
