A day after the state government refused to clear the caretaker policy for large open spaces in the city (more than 15,000 square metre), it stayed the revision in the policy.

TC Benjamin, the principal secretary, urban development department, made the announcement in the assembly in Nagpur on Friday.

The civic improvements committee had approved the revision on November 22. According to the changed policy, private organisations to whom plots were leased could build club houses and other amenities on 25 per cent of the plot.

Now that the revision has been stayed, the civic administration will continue to follow the policy guidelines passed last year. It gives preference to adoption of such plots. Municipal Commissioner Jairaj Phatak said the approval of the committee will now be reserved. Also, the stay will now stop any move to reopen the proposal as suggested by the Opposition Congress. The volte-face by Sena ally BJP has helped the Opposition.

RA Rajeev, additional municipal commissioner, has announced that pending applications of all residents associations and citizens’ groups for adopting gardens/ grounds will be cleared in 10 days. After the original policy was approved last year, BMC had received several applications for adoption, including 17 for large open plots (more than 15,000 square metre).

Rajeev said that advertisements for the adoption under the policy got delayed because of elections. The civic body will now advertise aggressively for adoption. But, if the response is poor the plots will be leased out to caretakers.
