NAGPUR: The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Thursday adopted a resolution by a voice vote repealing the provisions of the Urban Land Ceiling (ULC) Act in the state, amid opposition din opposing the move.

The resolution was put to vote after Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh assured the House that the Government would shortly bring a law imposing a tax on vacant land that had not been acquired under the provisions of the Act for various reasons.

Mr Deshmukh also said the maximum quantum of the land acquired hitherto, but which had not been developed, would be used by Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) and housing societies for developing affordable housing for the people.
