MUMBAI: India, which has completed the first round of talks on country-specific safeguards with IAEA in Vienna, to help implement the civil nuclear deal with the US, will hold the second round of talks with the world atomic watchdog in ten days, Department of Atomic Energy sources said here on Monday.

The second round of talks with IAEA would be held in ten days, the sources told.

Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Dr Anil Kakodkar had earlier said there was no fixed time frame for completion of the negotiations as it was a complex exercise but wished to complete it as soon as possible.

Kakodkar had also said the DAE will take utmost care to protect India's interest while negotiating with IAEA as this would brighten the chances for Indo-US deal civilian nuclear cooperation.

Indian negotiators, during technical talks with the IAEA in Vienna last week, did not spell out their approach, especially dealing with the plan to separate civilian and military nuclear facilities.

The Indian negotiators comprising diplomats and a technical team, has to satisfy the Agency's tough legal team comprising Johan Rautenbach, Director of Legal Affairs and Laura Rockwood, senior Legal advisor.

Although it is learnt that India would be negotiating on facility-specific and material-specific safeguards with IAEA, some of the safeguard veterans wondered how India was going to negotiate with IAEA on its separation plan arrangement under the Indo-US deal and how later they would be prepared to face the IAEA Board of governors on the issue.

The safeguards and their implementation are intended for nuclear fuel and material accountability.
