Call it a total sell-out of open spaces to private firms for construction of clubs, gymnasiums and sports complexes

MUMBAI: It was a classic case of bringing the house down. Opposition members from Congress and NCP on Friday interrupted the proceedings of the BMC general body meeting, disallowing mayor Shubha Raul to talk.

They were protesting against the amended recreation ground RG/PG playground policy, which allows private groups to take up open spaces on caretaker basis. The policy was approved by the Sena-BJP majority at the Improvements’ Committee meeting on Thursday.

Despite Raul’s repeated attempts to calm the corporators, they raised slogans like, “Mumbai ke bhukand ka shrikhand khana bandh karo,” “Sena-BJP hosh mein aao”, in the house.

Calling it a total sell-out of open spaces to private firms for construction of clubs, gymnasiums and sports complexes, opposition leader Rajhans Singh said that he plans to meet the party president to discuss the future course of action.

“We will launch a signature campaign to create awareness at railway stations. We will take the matter to chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and cancel the policy,” he said.

The opposition party informed that they will continue to disrupt the general body meetings till the administration agrees to reopen the proposal.

“The proposal was approved to favour Sena-BJP MLAs who have adopted a few plots and will now convert it into a caretaker policy,” said Congress corporator Amin Patel.

Kamat wants CM to intervene Mumbai Regional Congress Committee president Gurudas Kamat has sought Vilasrao Deshmukh’s intervention to halt “attempt by Shiv Sena and BJP to takeover open spaces in Mumbai”.

Kamat has urged Deshmukh to give necessary directions to municipal commissioner Jairaj Phatak to keep the policy on hold till detailed discussions are held with elected representatives.

Kamat also appealed to the legislators to take up the issue with the Chief Minister.
