CHENNAI: A US based Pakistani came to the rescue of an Indian woman after she was severely beaten up and abused by her husband in North Carolina, demanding more dowry.

Smaulin Jenita (23) from Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu, married to a software engineer O Christy Danius last June, was allegedly beaten up by him and his parents, pressing her for more dowry. She was three months pregnant in July when she was reportedly pushed out of a speeding car in North Carolina by her husband.

Jenita was admitted to a local hospital in USA, but her family in Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu were not informed about her plight.

It was Imanullah, a Pakistani working in the pathology department of the hospital, who collected the details and informed her parents, which helped them arrange for her return.

She was flown back here last night by an 'air ambulance'.

"Imanullah informed us of Jenita's situation and sent us photographs of her lying in coma, which we used as supporting documents to apply for a US visa. The Consulate here issued a visa to my father, A Sebastian, in half an hour," S Justin, her brother told here on Monday.

Justin said his sister had frequently sent the family e-mails.

Jenita's family was informed in July that she had met with an accident and had slipped into a coma.
