Agency is now hunting for CPI(M)-hired goons in areas around Nandigram

KOLKATA: In its second round of investigation into the police firing in Nandigram on March 14, 2007, the CBI may have to change its pattern.

Instead of concentrating directly on Nandigram, it will now focus on areas adjacent to East Midnapore district to hunt for anti-socials suspected to be a part of the CPI(M) team that formed a private army and recovered lost ground in Nandigram.

CBI sources told DNA that concentrating on Nandigram alone is unlikely to help the investigating team, since many clues are believed to be destroyed completely by now.

CBI officials believe after the successful Nandigram operation last week, many gunmen have taken shelter in adjacent areas.

The CBI had its share of success. After the Calcutta high court ordered continuation of CBI investigation on Friday, on Saturday morning, the CBI team arrested criminal Salim, along with four of his associates, from Mahishadal in East Midnapore district.

A notorious anti-social from South 24 Parganas, Salim was known for his proximity to the CPI(M). The CBI team believes that Salim and his associates were part of the Nandigram operations last week.

The CBI is questioning those arrested. Sources said similar leads are expected from Chandipur, Nandakumar and Khejuri areas in East Midnapore.

CPI(M) leaders from West Midnapore district — Tapan Ghosh and Shukar Ali who were long wanted by the CBI for their association with the Chota Angaria carnage — were arrested last week from near Nandigram.

Both of them allegedly led the CPI(M) private army from the Khejuri side. In the Chota Angaria carnage in 2003, about 10 Trinamool Congress workers were burnt to death.

However, the CBI is not quite confident of tracing those anti-socials whom they arrested in their first round of investigations.

Immediately after the March 14 police firing, the CBI arrested 10 criminals, along with arms and ammunition, from a brick kiln at Khejuri.

During interrogations many of them confessed that they shared a close relationship with the CPI(M). Later all of them were released on bail and after that they have disappeared.
