KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress on Saturday demanded the dismissal of the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government in West Bengal after the Calcutta High Court termed the March 14 police firing in Nandigram as "wholly unconstitutional and unjustifiable".

"If a government which swears to abide by the Constitution, violates its oath and acts unconstitutionally, it should be sacked by promulgating Article 356," TC chief Mamata Banerjee said after calling on West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi at the Raj Bhavan.

Banerjee, who headed a multi-party opposition delegation, including the Congress, told reporters that in its order on Friday, the High Court had clearly stated that the police firing was "wholly unconstitutional".

"This government should have resigned after the High Court's stricture. It should be sacked for its unconstitutional act. If the government is allowed to continue for political reasons, it will create a precedent and any state government will do whatever it likes," she said.

The TC chief said she gave a copy of the High Court order to the governor.

She also demanded that the police should act impartially and those police personnel who had "killed innocent people and protected the CPI-M" should be punished.

Banerjee also urged the governor to ensure that those who were going to Nandigram with relief for the violence-hit people, be given security.
