ISLAMABAD: With scores of leading lawyers being packed off to jail following the imposition of emergency in Pakistan, law students see a bleak future for themselves.

"How will we find a good job with all the good lawyers behind bars?" asked Sadiqa Naseem, a third year law student, who interned during her summer break with top lawyer Munir A Malik, who has been arrested.

"Most interns are asked to do filing and research and never learn the know-hows of the legal profession during their internship. But Malik Sahab worked very hard and taught me a lot," she told the Daily Times. "I want to work with him after I get my degree," rued Naseem, who like her fellow students feels it is unfair to pick lawyers who are 'striving to improve the country's legal system'.

Most law students have been closely following the legal fraternity's struggle for an independent judiciary since last year. But with the leading lights of the community, including Supreme Court Bar Association president Aitzaz Ahsan, being packed off to jail, they wonder how the 'change would be brought about'.

"Our teachers are mostly young who have just started out in the profession, so we can relate to the way they feel," said Osman Sheikh, another third year law student. "They tell us they are optimistic about the judicial system. But we know how things are," said another student.

"All we can hope to get is a job now, whether we look up to our employer and see him as our idol is something we will have to stop thinking about," he added.

Sheikh was quite sure his batch, which is closely monitoring events on the internet, will not be able to make a 'difference' to the judiciary. Students have been following banned news channels on the internet to keep abreast of the current situation.
