NANDIGRAM: Fresh arson and gunfire between rival groups rocked Nandigram on Sunday as West Bengal's ruling CPI(M) took control of strongholds of an anti-farmland acquisition group backed by opposition Trinamool Congress whose chief Mamata Banerjee attempted to access the area.
     
The situation in Nandigram evoked "deep concern" from a key aide of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is now in Moscow, and CPI(M) came under fire from its Left Front allies RSP, CPI and Forward Bloc who accused the marxist party of being responsible for the violence there.
    
Sonachura and Garchakraberia under Nandigram Block I were recaptured by CPI(M) as many houses were set ablaze and looted and people kidnapped after exchange of fire between CPI(M) and
TC-supported Bhumi Uchched Pratirodh Committee with the police nowhere to be seen,'' Youth Congress district leader and BUPC member Milon Pradhan and eye witnesses said.
    
Fearing casualties in CPI(M)'s renewed attack, Pradhan claimed his father had also been kidnapped. ''None knows where the kidnapped persons have been taken.''
    
In Kolkata, CPI(M) Central Committee member Shyamal Chakraborty claimed "at last, Nandigram is free from terror. Today, people in villages at Sonachura. Garchakraberia and Kalinagar and other areas who had fled their homes have returned.
    
Mamata Banerjee, trying to go to Nandigram, managed to enter Tamluk in East Midnapore district on a motorcycle amidst high drama despite blockade by CPI(M), visited the injured in hospital and staged a dharna.
