NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee's resignation from Lok Sabha to protest the "bloodshed" in Nandigram may not be accepted as the letter is not in the prescribed format, Lok Sabha Secretariat sources said on Sunday.

Responding to questions, the sources said a resignation letter has to be addressed to the Lok Sabha Speaker and should be unconditional.

However, the letter sent by Banerjee is addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with a copy to Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, they said, adding that it contained a long list of reasons for her action.

The sources said since the letter was not in the prescribed format, the Speaker may not be able to consider it.

The Trinamool Congress leader had in 2005 sent a similar resignation letter addressed to Deputy Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal after she threw papers at the podium in the House. Her resignation notice was not accepted at that time also.

Banerjee had yesterday announced her resignation from the Lok Sabha in protest against the situation in Nandigram and said her party would "paralyse" West Bengal for an indefinite period from Monday.
