KOLKATA: The romance between a poor Muslim youth, Rizwanur Rahman, and a rich industrialist's daughter, Priyanka Todi, that has ended in tragedy will now be made into a film.

Kolkata filmmaker Goutam Sen is busy writing the script of the film based on the relationship between the couple, culminating in Rizwanur's death and a near crisis for the West Bengal government.

"Though the film is inspired by the Priyanka-Rizwanur case, it will not be a typical love story. It will try to seek an answer to problems faced by couples in such a similar situation. The film will explore the economic and sociological angles in a relationship and examine whether love can survive in the face of adversities," Sen said.

"My film will highlight the awakening of the civil society. Two years back, when I was working on a project under the Dalai Lama Foundation, I found how civil awakening helps in fostering relations between India and Pakistan," he said.

Shooting for the film, to be made on a budget of Rs.3 million, would begin by December-end or January.

"I hope to finish the scripting by November. I've already done a tentative casting. I would like to cast Kanchana Moitra in the role inspired by Priyanka Todi," Sen said.

Noted actress Debasree Roy will essay the role of a social activist. Sabyasachi Chakraborty will play the role of former police commissioner Prasun Mukherjee.

Rizwanur Rahman, a 30-year-old graphic designer, was found dead with his head smashed September 21 near the railway tracks, barely a month after his marriage to Priyanka, daughter of multi-billion Lux Cozi group owner Ashok Todi.

Todi allegedly threatened his son-in-law with dire consequences and put pressure on him through the police to annul the marriage.

Before his death, Rizwanur accused police officers Gyanwant Singh, Ajoy Kumar, Sukanta Chakraborty and Krishnendu Das of harassing him.

Faced with public outcry, the Buddhadeb Bhattacharya government removed the tainted cops, including Prasun Mukherjee, who tried to defend Todi and his IPS colleagues after the death.
